Working With Master Promissory Notes (MPNs)
The Master Promissory Note (MPN) is a legal document that explains the terms and conditions of a federal loan to the borrower, which the borrower must sign in order for the loan to be disbursed.
MPNs are imported into PowerFAIDS as a type of response file from Common Origination and Disbursement (COD). An MPN can be viewed in a student's record from the Tools menu in the Federal Loans page under Packaging.
Depending on how the MPN was received, it may or may not be linked to an award in PowerFAIDS. When needed, an MPN can be associated with an award by completing the following steps:
- Select the associated academic year and grant.
Similarly to all other packaging data pages on the student record, the Federal Loans page allows you to easily switch between data for different academic years a student is enrolled in. Whenever navigating to this page, ensure the appropriate academic year is selected from the list under the Federal Loans header.
- Open the Master Promissory Notes window to view the MPN ID.
- From the Tools menu under the page header in the upper-right, select +Master Promissory Notes to open the Master Promissory Notes window.
- Locate the appropriate MPN in the list and make note of the ID (1). Each MPN can be expanded to view award details; MPNs with the message "No records associated" in the award details section (2) have not yet been linked to an award in PowerFAIDS.
Note: Because the MPN ID contains the student's social security number, it is considered personally identifiable information (PII). You will need to have permissions to unmask PII in order to view the ID.
- Associate the MPN ID to the appropriate award.
- Once you've noted the MPN ID, close out of the Master Promissory Notes window.
- Select the tab of the loan you want to associate with the MPN.
- In the COD Award Details section of the page, update the MPN ID field to the appropriate ID.
If you reopen the Master Promissory Notes window after associating the MPN, you will now see the award details section populated.
