Creating and Editing a Cost of Attendance Category

To create a cost of attendance category, complete the following steps:

  1. Select System Administration in the top navigation bar to open the System Administration menu along the left side of the page.
  2. Expand the Campus Information options in the left navigation menu and select Cost of Attendance Categories.
  1. Select + Add New to add a new cost of attendance category in the Cost of Attendance Categories table.

  2. Enter the Display Sequence for the new cost of attendance category. This is the order in which the cost of attendance categories will be displayed in student communications such as award letters.
  3. Enter the Institutional Name of the category. This is the name of the category as it will appear internally and in external communications.
  4. Select the associated Federal Category from the list.
  5. Select whether the Cost Type is considered a direct or indirect cost.
  6. If desired, select a Category Type to further define the category.

    7. Tip: Category Type must be populated for all categories if you are a school that partners with Ruffalo Noel-Levitz using their Advanced FinAid Solutions (AFAS) product. This ensures that the AFAS Standard Report will have the COA information calculated.

  1. Ensure the Display Sequence is set appropriately.
  2. Set the Display in Communications field to Yes if you want this category to be displayed in external communications (such as letters, emails, and student portal).

A success message is displayed in the upper right portion of the page letting you know the cost of attendance category has been created.

Once created, you'll see the cost of attendance category in the Cost of Attendance Categories table. Make any necessary edits to the parameters you previously set.
